Summer is in full swing here in Baltimore. How has it been for you thus far? Have you had a chance to go swimming, maybe at a beach along the coast? Have you gone on any vacations or have any planned? Has your home made it this far without being invaded by termites? Now, we know this last question may catch you off guard, but we are talking about termites today and finding out if your home is currently at risk is our number one priority.
How long is termite season here In Baltimore?
The good news is that pests here in Baltimore don’t like our cold winters. This means that, unlike in other southern states, we get a reprieve from destructive pests, such as termites. The only question is, when does this reprieve come around? Normally we see a drastic decrease in termite activity around late fall and heading into winter. However, for some homeowners, this reprieve may not come, mainly because when termites invade homes they find the warmth they need to survive the cold winter ahead. On top of this, because termites are wood-consuming pests, assuming the home they have infested is made even partly of wood, they will have enough food to last them well through the colder months.
Warning Signs to Watch Out for and Where Damage Occurs
Hopefully, your home does not currently have a termite infestation. However, if it does, the following signs will help you to know for sure:
- Dipping, sagging, or bubbling wallpaper or paint.
- Mud tubes running up the exterior foundation of your home.
- Overly squeaky floorboards.
- Hollow-sounding wood.
- Termite swarmers (winged termites) flying around inside.
On top of these signs, some other signs that can help you know if your home is at risk include leaks around your home as well as sources of water that may be or could in the future soften up the wood of your home for hungry termites.
